Cooperation for Democracy: Strengthening Partnerships
The partnership protocol was officially signed on Tuesday (18/6) at the AGU headquarters in Brasília during the 3rd Ordinary Meeting of the Democracy Observatory. Jorge Messias emphasized that the partnership between AGU and IDP will yield positive outcomes. ‘We have great confidence in this partnership,’ said the Attorney General of the Union, Jorge Messias, at the opening of the meeting.
‘I believe that through the research lines that will be opened with this agreement, with the fact that IDP has embraced this initiative and has invested in us, is extraordinary in itself. Knowing that there is a high degree of interest, I have learned that several IDP students have already approached the coordination, wanting to know, gather information on how to actively participate in this initiative. Here is a seed that is planted, and I want to say that it will flourish and bear good fruits,’ he added.
The agreement was signed by Messias, the Minister of Justice and Public Security and President of the Democracy Observatory, Ricardo Lewandowski, the Minister of the Federal Supreme Court Gilmar Mendes, the Director of the Higher School of AGU (ESAGU), João Carlos Souto, and the Director-General of IDP, Francisco Mendes.
The agreement stipulates that the institutions must designate representatives within 30 days to coordinate the execution of the protocol. In addition, AGU and IDP must develop a Work-Plan, implement actions, and monitor results.
‘D democracy stands tall and flourishes in Brazil through initiatives like this, such as Minister Jorge Messias’ creation of the Democracy Observatory, which is a center for study, reflection, and debate on the subject. So, this agreement being celebrated today with an institution undoubtedly one of the most important in Brazil, which is IDP, precisely crowns this entire process of strengthening democracy, and we are confident that we will reap the benefits of this agreement,’ emphasized Souto. Lewandowski highlighted the importance of deepening academic research on the subject.
According to the minister, ‘democracy is not a given; it is constructed, it is something that demands an effort from all citizens in their daily lives. And this effort is made not only in practice, in the activities of Parliament, in public institutions, but above all, I think, in academia. It is necessary to study the highs and lows, the advances and setbacks of this multisecular institution, which is the only valid form of coexistence among people in society. I see with great satisfaction, as the president of this Democracy Observatory, the signing of this collaboration instrument with one of the largest Brazilian educational institutions, recognized for its excellence, which is IDP, and I am sure that it will greatly contribute to the advancement of our research on this fundamental value, which is democracy,’ he evaluated.
Realization of Democratic Ideals: Training and Research Initiatives
Following the agreement, the Democracy Observatory will, with the assistance of ESAGU, organize activities such as coordinating courses, lectures, seminars, debate forums, working groups, and high-quality training programs. This collaboration aims to enhance the understanding and promotion of democratic principles, fostering a culture of cooperation and knowledge exchange between AGU, IDP, and other relevant stakeholders. Through joint efforts and a shared commitment to democratic values, the partnership seeks to advance research, trainings, and initiatives that contribute to the consolidation of a democratic system in Brazil and beyond.
